Meet The Counselor
Melvin Battle
Licensed Professional Counselor, LCMHC
I’m a mentor by nature, and a therapist by profession. As an African American man and mental health professional, I am very interested in the statistics show that African Americans and other ethnic minorities have traditionally been unwilling to seek treatment for mental disorders. I often refer to myself as MJ, in reference to the great Michael Jordan, because I work hard as a team player to help my clients reach their mental health goals.
Several factors reinforced my efforts to create services to assist and rejuvenate clients with similar journeys: growing up in a single parent home with limited resources; my own traumatic experiences; my education; and my work experiences.
Our History
Battle, my last name, has grown on me. Once I gave my last name to my wife, a fellow social
worker, and my three sons, I realized the importance of carrying the name and leaving a long-lasting impression.

In 2012, I started Battle for Change, a mentoring organization, to do my part in our community. Through mentoring, I realized that many of our youth continued to face challenges because of their environment and upbringing, which led me to pursue a career in mental health counseling.
From my years of experience in the hospital, community, residential, and psychiatric settings, I developed clinical approaches that help facilitate rapport and improve clients overall mental health.
